Pitch, Please: Selling Your Writing to Editors

Note: This class takes place live on Zoom on October 6th from 12:00 - 2:00pm Eastern / 5:00 - 7:00pm UK. A recording will be sent out for attendees who can’t make it.

After three sell-out editions of this class, it’s back!

You’ve got a brilliant idea for an essay or article that you’re sure should be gracing the pages of Vogue or the New York Times. That’s the easy part. Catching a busy editor’s eye can be a lot tougher. Enter the perfect pitch: the first step to seeing your words out there in the world where they belong. This class will provide a hands-on, practical guide to writing pitches that grab an editor's attention and lead to publication.

Things We’ll Cover

  • A step-by-step approach to writing a pitch, using a tried and tested template for that will make editors notice you.

  • Details on how to find outlets and individual editors to send your pitch to.

  • Guidance on the process of pitching and getting published, with tips on how to stay organized and focused.

  • A live pitch workshop with feedback from Alisha and your peers

Who This Class is For

Writers looking to get their work – personal essays, reported features, and even short creative non-fiction – published in magazines, journals, newspapers and publications. Note this class does not cover the process of querying for book length projects as part of the main subject, but I’m always happy to take questions on this.

Why Take This Class With Me

Back in 2021 I hadn’t seen my name in print since high school. But when I set out to write My What If Year, I wanted to start sharing shorter personal essays as well .

I went from a standing start to having pieces published in Vogue, Marie Claire, Shondaland, Insider, Romper, The Good Trade and so many more. It’s not rocket science – just following a clear template and setting up a process will take you far. I love sharing what I know with other writers and helping them grab their very own bylines.

I’ve taught a version of this class before with the wonderful Zibby Classes, and here are a few nice things people had to say:

I wanted you to know that my latest pitch got picked up by the Association of MBAs - a group of 60,000 readers! Your course was great and it opened my eyes to a whole world I didn’t really know existed. Thanks so much. - Jennifer G.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you for the amazing insight, resources and expertise you provided in the class!  It was not only helpful but inspiring and motivating as well (I ended up writing a lot today). I really learned a lot of invaluable information in those two hours! - Kristi K.

Thanks so much for an awesome and inspiring class. This pitching is beginning to become demystified for me. I’m so new in this publishing world and I’m trying to learn as much as I can. The class is propelling me onward. Thank you! - Erin H.
